Windows vs. Mac OS X (Security)

I have used Windows all my life, starting with 95, 97, 98 (and Plus also), and finally XP Professional. It never occur to me that there were other OS different from Windows until I did some research two years ago when I decided to get a laptop. There was Linux OS and Mac OS. Apparently I would’ve gone for a laptop with Windows OS coz it’s user friendly. But I also wanted to try something new, something different from Windows. And that’s when I decided to ask for opinions from some family members. They’ve recommended me to get Mac for both work and entertainment. I already knew that Mac being the easiest OS once you know it. Anyways, many Windows in the markets are pirated and cost very cheaply. Mac OS X on the other hand, cannot be found in pirated version in markets. They come directly from Apple Company to authorized dealers. Let us first take a look at security issues in Windows, which I know from experience is debacle, in details:

1.    Is Windows Firewall up to the task of securing your network? We delve into the details of this host-based state-full firewall and weigh its pros and cons.
Windows Firewall debuted with the release of Windows XP, and Windows XP Service Pack 2 enabled this feature by default. This host-based state-full firewall replaced Windows’ Internet Connection Firewall.
2.    Know your options
On the General tab, you can use the On and Off radio buttons to enable or disable Windows Firewall. You can also choose to disallow exceptions.
3.    Know how to adjust the settings
You can use the method described above to manually change the Windows Firewall settings. However, you can also use a variety of methods more suited for enterprise deployments.

The Windows Firewall does a good job of proxying inbound responses to outbound connection requests, and it does a good job of blocking inbound connection requests for TCP or UDP conversations that you haven’t initiated. It will block any connection attempts that you haven’t specifically allowed in the settings. However, that’s only half of what a firewall needs to do.

Bottom-line.
As far as I’m concerned, a firewall mechanism that only works one way is a security feature — not a firewall. Thanks to viruses, worms, Trojans, and a host of other malware and spyware that arrive on your computer daily, you need to be able to control communications from both directions.
Every computer connected to any network (e.g., dial-up, Ethernet, or wireless) needs a firewall, and Windows Firewall just isn’t up to the task. Find yourself a free firewall or pay for one from a reputable vendor, but don’t let Windows Firewall fool you into thinking it completely protects your computer. Half a firewall is no better than no firewall at all.

There are so many anti-virus softwares like McAfee Internet Security, AVG Internet Security etc. The best being NOD32 Internet Security. It keeps scanning without your knowing. It’ll detect virus and delete it before letting u know what it has done.

Now let’s take a look at Mac’s security. I don’t know much about Mac’s security but I know this; it doesn’t receives any viruses and if it does, then you’re in for a big trouble because it’s difficult to remove it. I recommend you use PC Tools iAntivirus.

PC Tools iAntivirus features realtime protection, scheduled quick scans, and scheduled updates. Monitoring mode keeps iAntivirus working truly in the background, ideal for those who don’t want to be disturbed by alerts or anyone trying to conserve laptop batteries.
PC Tools iAntivirus detects and removes Mac-specific malware only. This can be either very good or very bad, depending on your perspective. While a Mac-only focus keeps iAntivirus running lighter and faster than other Macintosh antivirus software, it also means a Mac user could inadvertently share files infected with Windows-based malware. Macro viruses, for example, aren’t detected by iAntivirus - corporate users sharing Office documents between Windows and Mac users will want to make sure macro virus protection on both sides is enabled.
PC Tools iAntivirus is currently in beta, supports Intel-based Mac OS X v10.5 only, and is free for home (or home office) use.

New OS for iphone on March 17th

We just got the announcement, iPhone OS 3.0 is coming. Set your clocks, mark your calendars. It’s going down March 17th. Apparently, we’ll get a sneak peak at the new OS, as well as a look at a brand new version of the SDK. Exciting stuff indeed, and we’ll be there live at 10am PST (1pm EST) with the liveblog. Apple’s calling this an “advance preview of what we’re building,” so we’re not expecting anything ready to go as of the 17th, but hopefully this will allow developers to start building toward future functionality (hey, how about some push notifications?), and presumably users won’t have too many months to wait after that for the real deal.

Bluetooth transfer iphone is possible now!

iBluetooth, an application for bluetooth file transfer via iPhone has finally arrived to the iSpazio repository.

The application currently requires registration and the author’s (MeDevil’s) site has gone down due to high traffic.

iBluetooth costs 3.99 euro and the funds raised from this will be used by MeDevil to purchase a complete bluetooth stack for a background daemon.

—–

Implementing a complete and stable stack (with all the bluetooth profiles) is nearly impossible for me in a short time, so i’ve considered the idea of buying a complete (and well tested) stack. Now there are only 3 stacks that support almost all bluetooth profiles: BlueMagic, BCHS, and ClarinoxBlue. Of course all of these are VERY EXPENSIVE. So, i’ve decided to make you pay for this application so i can buy one of those stacks for ALL the community and implement a background daemon that will provide a full-featured stack for ANY developer out there.

Please undertand that the “free way” is not the right way. If you want this application “for free” then take the “cracked version” but you’re essentially removing yourself the possibility to have more features, such as: A2DP (Audio stereo), Serial Port (needed for bluetooth gps), DUN & LAP (internet navigation), which could be implemented in a small time and used by all of the developers out there.

Think of xGPS developers adding support for bluetooth GPS devices or other free developers adding bluetooth functionality to native apps like contact, photos or any other infinite idea that developers can have! And yes, writing a complete stack is always possible, but how much [time] do you think it will take? Look, i’ve spent 3 months only for the obex part…. and that’s a small part… it’s just one (ONE) profile out of 27! So think about it! Regards, Domenico.

Microsoft Entourage 2004 Backup!

Planning to shift to Leopard? What to back-up? These series of posts will focus on Backing up important data in your Mac before going for the latest cat in town; Leopard! Whatever, method you opt for, its always good to be safe and back up important data of your mac! We’ll start off with backing up data of Microsoft Entourage 2004, a mail client on mac, usually preferred by people who are used to of outlook.

Entourage!

The entourage team has done a good job at explaining the back up process. Click Help and enter “Back up” (with a space in both words) and help brings the topic at top. See Image below:

Backup

We’ll use the same text provided in the help for explaination.

Entourage can export items such as mail messages, tasks, contacts, notes, and calendar events to an Entourage archive (.rge extension). This enables you to store information in another location and remove it from Entourage. You can also use this process to make a back up of your Entourage information (without removing the information from Entourage).

Some important notes:

When creating Entourage back ups and archives, keep the following in mind:

  • Groups, notes with multimedia elements and category information for all items except contacts cannot be exported.
  • When exporting messages stored on a mail server (such as IMAP accounts), the entire contents of the message can only be exported if it has been downloaded from the mail server.
  • Even if you choose to delete items after exporting, messages stored on the mail server will not be deleted.

Backing Up!

  1. Empty all Deleted Items folders to avoid getting items you do not want.
  2. On the File menu, click Export.
  3. Click Export items to an Entourage archive and select the items you want to include.
  4. Under Archive the following item types, select the item types you want to include, and then click the right arrow to continue.Entourage Export 1
  5. Choose whether or not you want to delete the items you are exporting and then click the right arrow to continue.Entourage Export 2
  6. Enter a name for the archive file and a location to store it and then click SaveEntourage Export 3

Restore!

To restore Entourage information

  1. On the File menu, click Import.
  2. Click Import information from an Entourage archive and then click the right arrow to continue.
  3. Locate the .rge folder you want to import and then click Import.

Tips:

  • If you need to refer to information stored in an archive temporarily and do not want the items imported into Entourage, create a new Identity and import the archived information into it. Then, when you are finished, you can simply delete the new Identity. This tip can also be used to confirm if the Back up is made completely and contains all data.
  • If you want to explore the contents of an archive, hold down CONTROL while clicking the .rge folder and then click Show Package Contents.
