India to launch cheapest laptop

NEW DELHI: India has announced that US$20 laptop computers to educate poor children will be on the market in less than six months.

It has been three years since the Indian government started a project to develop an ultra-cheap laptop in cooperation with Indian Institute of Science, IIT-Madras, and Vellore Institute of Technology.

“At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down,” an official with the Indian Ministry of Human Resources Development said.

Experts say the price will probably only be possible because of massive subsidies from the Indian government, though they add new technology could allow researchers to cut production costs significantly.
