Microsoft Entourage 2004 Backup!

Planning to shift to Leopard? What to back-up? These series of posts will focus on Backing up important data in your Mac before going for the latest cat in town; Leopard! Whatever, method you opt for, its always good to be safe and back up important data of your mac! We’ll start off with backing up data of Microsoft Entourage 2004, a mail client on mac, usually preferred by people who are used to of outlook.

Entourage!

The entourage team has done a good job at explaining the back up process. Click Help and enter “Back up” (with a space in both words) and help brings the topic at top. See Image below:

Backup

We’ll use the same text provided in the help for explaination.

Entourage can export items such as mail messages, tasks, contacts, notes, and calendar events to an Entourage archive (.rge extension). This enables you to store information in another location and remove it from Entourage. You can also use this process to make a back up of your Entourage information (without removing the information from Entourage).

Some important notes:

When creating Entourage back ups and archives, keep the following in mind:

  • Groups, notes with multimedia elements and category information for all items except contacts cannot be exported.
  • When exporting messages stored on a mail server (such as IMAP accounts), the entire contents of the message can only be exported if it has been downloaded from the mail server.
  • Even if you choose to delete items after exporting, messages stored on the mail server will not be deleted.

Backing Up!

  1. Empty all Deleted Items folders to avoid getting items you do not want.
  2. On the File menu, click Export.
  3. Click Export items to an Entourage archive and select the items you want to include.
  4. Under Archive the following item types, select the item types you want to include, and then click the right arrow to continue.

    Entourage Export 1

  5. Choose whether or not you want to delete the items you are exporting and then click the right arrow to continue.

    Entourage Export 2

  6. Enter a name for the archive file and a location to store it and then click Save

    Entourage Export 3

Restore!

To restore Entourage information

  1. On the File menu, click Import.
  2. Click Import information from an Entourage archive and then click the right arrow to continue.
  3. Locate the .rge folder you want to import and then click Import.

Tips:

  • If you need to refer to information stored in an archive temporarily and do not want the items imported into Entourage, create a new Identity and import the archived information into it. Then, when you are finished, you can simply delete the new Identity.

This tip can also be used to confirm if the Back up is made completely and contains all data.

  • If you want to explore the contents of an archive, hold down CONTROL while clicking the .rge folder and then click Show Package Contents.

Leopard Installation Issues!

We were able to get our hands on the latest Mac OS 10.5 code named Leopard. According to Apple, Leopard carries 300 new features. To unleash all Leopard has to deliver, we decided to give it a try on a Macbook (white, 2.0 Ghz, 512mb ram, 60gb hd etc.)

Leopard, just like its predecessors (panther, tiger etc.) gives you 3 install options:

  1. Upgrade:
Install the new OS on top of current used OS, which is in majority of cases will be Tiger.
  2. Archive & Install
Apple’s preferred method in which previous settings are kept in an archive
  3. Clean Install
Our preferred method, which makes sure that a Fresh OS is installed leaving behind any issues to worry about

Which ever method you chose, precursor to Installation activity should be “Backup”. Backup all and everything which you worry about. Check Apple support site to read about this topic in detail. We Backed-up the following data:

Mac OS X User Profile

Thats pretty much everything about you. If you store data in folders on Mac HD, you should definitely also backup that data. Backup, Backup all and everything before venturing into the actual installation process.

Also, upgrade your Firmware before heading for installation. Majority of bad installations were caused due to old firmwares.

Hard Disk condition is also a big issue. Check through Disk Utility, placed in Applications > Utility section for an updated review of your Hard Disk.

The installation process takes about 45 minutes approx. to finish off smoothly. Following is a list of known bugs, which are the first to hit any major OS launch.

  • Faulty Media/Disk:
Before installation process kicks-off, the Disk is checked for consistency. Under NO circumstances Skip the process, its better to check the media before bumping in middle of the install (We faced this error big time)
  • BSOD (Blue Screen of Death):
This one makes Windows crowd proud. After a complete install, the OS appears to be prone to errors like windows. Apple support have number of reasons mentioned for this error.
  • OS Login Screen Stall:
Either the Grey Screen before Login or the Blue Screen after Login”Stalls”. Apple has listed many reasons for it in the support section

We think that many of the errors mentioned above are due to usual Upgrade method chose. If we were to select, Clean Install is the best option.
As usual, feel free to email us on support@shophive.com your questions / queries and we’ll dig in answers for you.

A Trojan Horse in the Mac Land

You read us right, its true. A group of hackers are successful in getting into the Mac fortress. But there are few important things to note here.

  1. It only affected those people who accepted to download a fake Codec dmg
  2. When the app is mounted, they themselves agreed to install it

The payload of the Trojan was set to alter the DNS table to hacker sites. But innovation can be made, therefore the word is Caution to keep your eyes open and keep your fingers in control.
